Hate Me, Please...........

I’ll wrap myself in the envelope of hazy dreams

and I’ll mail myself to you

I’ll burn myself with the flames of passion

and I’ll send my ashes to you

I’ll drown myself in the pain of my void heart

and I’ll record my throbs for you

I’ll kiss my image in the mirror of smoky death

and I’ll preserve the corpse for you

Only then you’ll learn to hate me

To despise me with all your heart…………

Perhaps that's the only thing I want

Bored, Tired, et cetra

Pull a trigger
Bloom a flower
Do whatever
Doesn’t matter
To me
Anymore
Anymore

Fall in love
Kill a dove
Do whatever
Don’t bother
Me
Anymore
Anymore

Be a hero
Fiddle with Nero
Do whatever
I’m not your father
I’m not your mother
I’m not your lover
I’m not your sister
I’m not your daughter
I’m not your brother
And I’m not your son
So leave me alone
Just leave me alone

Children’s rhymes
Heinous crimes
All the same
Part of a game
Am no player
So why shall I care?
Go find yourself a soothsayer!

A fucks B’s wife
C takes D’s life
E has a sharp knife
F and G in constant strife
H goes to Sunday Mass
I fingers his own ass
J says his bedtime prayer
K doesn’t really care
L loves fistfights
M hates dark nights
Everything’s nice, everyone’s fine
I’m really happy, am on Cloud Nine!
I’ve earned my freedom at great cost
So don’t pester me, fuck off, get lost!!!

Just stop fooling around and off you go!
Or else I might bust your balls, you never know!!!

Me Pink You Pink Yellow Green Toad Happy Bad Sad

Tell me green stories
Let me not think about sex
Just tell me stories
Or else I’ll tie you up with the horns
of a big pink unicorn…..
I bet you won’t like that
So tell me green stories
And purple stories too
And the story of the one-eyed mouse
Or else I’ll make you my diary
And I’ll pour out all my sadness in you
I bet you won’t like that either
So tell me all the stories you know
Stories of all the raindrops you’ve petted
and all the colours you love…..
Or else, get ready to face the consequent
accidents and mishaps
Blehhhhh!!!!!!!!

The Moon and My Unrequitted Love

The moon makes me sad every night
She makes me sigh
And the clouds – at times they cover
her body like a purple veil
At other times, she’s naked –
Like a silent fairy
Like a faithful dream….

I’m a night-bird
And like other night-birds
I seek to make love to the moon
But I hide myself in the womb
of the night, for I fear
the creatures of the dark….

The stars are the children of God
And they remind me of eternity
They are frozen in their own silence
Like forgotten sighs and broken promises….

Sorrows are the ashes of life
Life burns, pale and cold –
Like the fire of Babylon
The moon is pale and cold as well
She is a princess – banished
from the kingdom of love….

I love the moon
But she doesn’t love me,
She loves the lonely cherry tree
which stands, sad and forlorn
in a lonesome valley beyond the hills
and beyond the horizon…

And on new moon nights, when
she’s allowed to go back to the kingdom
from which she was banished
The cherry tree weeps in silence…
And I fly to the cherry tree
to drink the honey of his tears
That keeps me alive
And that’s why the moon
doesn’t love me,
She thinks that, unlike the cherry tree,
my love is selfish….

But this isn’t true
For had the moon loved me
instead of the cherry tree,
He wouldn’t have cried for her
on new moon nights,
And I would have starved to death…..

The moon doesn’t understand me
Nobody does
But I love the moon
And I’ll keep on loving her…….

History and Her Mystery

Hail the future hail the past
Falling like brickbats thick and fast
Hail the knight and hail the squire
Hail the pageboy who’s gone somewhere
Hail the king and hail his crown
Hail the kingdom hail the clown
Hail the princess sleeping in her bed
Hail her pigeons – those are well fed
Hail the queen and hail her maid
Hail the poet and the words he said
Hail the worker earning his bread
Hail the soldier though he’s dead
Hail the church and hail its priest
Hail the hero – he has slain a beast
Hail the farmer who’s reaping his wheat
Hail the sparrow – it goes tweet tweet
Hail the cynic and hail his scorn
Hail the Magi for a Star is Born
Hail them all, friends, hail them now
For they’ve got stuck in history somehow

Five Snippets of Solitude

1)
Perhaps darkness was better than light
Perhaps life was better than death
Perhaps the soldiers should have marched back
But the twilight the twilight the twilight…..
Who dares defy the orders of the twilight
in the city of the civil guards ?

2)
Here, in these tired and restless corners
There are no pyramids or totem-poles
to remember the dead moths
Yet, and yet, they are remembered
by those cats – darker than the nights,
who used to make love before the sea

3)
But I shall not seek that city
where time seeks the blood of lovers
I shall not seek that river
where hyacinths refuse to bloom…..
And I shall not seek the room
where the roof smells like death

4)
Must I embark on that dreary voyage
in search of solitude?
Must I refuse the love that comes
to me in tattered robes?
Must I wake up every night
and watch helplessly as my city

burns in silence?
Must I keep on crying in the empty
stone corridors only to hear my
own tears mocking me in echoes?

5)
Ah, these are forbidden thoughts
Empty like the sounds of our

very own footsteps…..
What matters is that you made me happy
I used to wake up to stare at the garland
of a thousand voices and dreams
encircling your naked body as you slept….
You made me happy
Or maybe it was the rain
Aye, the rain…

A Hyena in China

Once there lived a hyena
Beyond the Great Wall of China
It went to a dead lion’s den
And put on the dead lion’s mane
And became an utterly fake king
(I’m not talking ‘bout Deng Xiaoping)

Troubles began soon
Some of them sought the moon
But not the silver spoon
So the hyena ordered rocks from the Alps
And crushed the troublemakers to pulps
Everybody watched the show
And when they had to go
Said “Amen!”
(I’m in no mood to discuss Tiananmen)

A certain big brother outside was busy with oil
And was already perturbed by some other turmoil
Besides, being once bitten by an ally of the dead lion
He feared similar fate in the hands of the hyena’s scion
And so he decided to remain cool
While the hyena’s successors continued to rule
(Don’t think of America, you bloody fool !)

Upholding the banner of equality
They treat all with the same brutality
Except a few who are extremely clever
And wise enough to pay their taxes in silver
But the hyenas are never put to shame
It’s only the mane that gets a bad name
Think twice friends, whom shall we blame?
(If you think I’m defending all things Red
Tomorrow morning you’ll find yourself dead
Lying in the Yellow River’s yellow bed
You better get this notion straight in your head)

Of Midnight Drunkenness

Darkness throughout….Occasional glints of yellow-orange….
Cars rolling by…. Jokers and eroticism

Chaos and hysteria…. Madness prevails
Few goblins digging the mist and silence….
They have a few dead fireflies to bury

Clock hands are but daggers – meant to stab time
And Einstein wouldn’t have denied this
Sudden intense desire to shoot down
all the sheriffs and their deputies

Streets getting flooded with blood
Blood – of my strong brothers and sweet sisters
Blood – of all my friends
They’re bleeding to death
I can hear their mortal screams and moaning
at dead of night
Curtains shake

Breeze, Breeze, Breeze
Skeletons hanging down the street-lights
The lights are yellow
The nights are yellow

Fleshes cry for poison and eternity
Bones are silent
Nights are silent

Lucifer loses his faith, and that’s
the worst possibility….

Yearnings embark on their futile voyage
Yearnings for naked solitude…

An owl sits atop the roof of the public lavatory
down below, across the street
The street reminds of forgotten prophets
The graffito on the wall of the lavatory –
it’s a blue sunflower,
But it smells like tears of old Gypsy storytellers…..

Sky becomes sea – dark, morose, thoughtful –
like Tintoretto’s Paradise....
Sea becomes a wolf
Hope loses virginity
Rain loses creativity

High on saintly delights:
Might burst into peels of laughter pretty soon
Blue halo of clouds around the moon:
Green signal to the tears….
Laughter and tears – brother and sister
Both sired by the mirrors
And hence they come hand in hand...

Silent poetry of being….
Teardrops and petals from the womb of night
Tears are the wings of words
Once detached, words become petals
and fall, lifeless, on torn pages of poetry
Blank pages, blank verse…..
Petals of black rose
Never seen a black rose in life
And that’s reason enough to cry

Never begged for love or mercy
Begged for thunderbolts…
Begging for aurora borealis
Would have begged for immortality in future
had future existed

Shadows fall…
Other things fall as well –
Body, soul, flesh, blood, bones, semen,
lives, epitaphs, stories, empires, twilight
sadness, totems, hermits, angels, flowers
butterflies, fears, nightmares, Jocasta
moksha, parking lots, tunnels, ukulele,
benzedrine, hallelujah, roman candles,
sex-parties, stereophony, unrequited love
etc etc etc

Me standing before the mirror
with a cigarette and some
desired bitterness between my lips –
Wholesome, naked, happy….
Me – laughing…..
Me leaning against the balcony
with a cactus, a cat and a few severed limbs
near my feet –
Shattered, intense, sad…
Me – crying…..

Fifteen Reasons Not to Cry

Right at this moment
Fifteen silent echoes in the valley of magic
have sired fifteen children
Right at this moment
Fifteen saxophones celebrate their birth
in fifteen different tones

Right at this moment
Fifteen little sparrows have fallen off
their nests, chirping
Right at this moment
Fifteen church bells are tolling
near the Gates of Sorrow
mourning their death

Right at this moment
Fifteen young men have decided to become saints
and have set themselves on fire
Right at this moment
Fifteen old men are staring
at those very fires contemplating jazz

Right at this moment
Fifteen boys have discovered
their Oedipus complex and are
too perplexed to react
Right at this moment
Fifteen scholars have submitted
their papers on suppressed sexuality

Right at this moment
Fifteen nuns are enacting Resurrection
in a monastery, clad in black robes
Right at this moment
Fifteen paintings of Giacometti
watch their play from the frames

Right at this moment
Fifteen rivers have dried up
and fifteen moons have drowned in them
Right at this moment
A gypsy poet is writing a ballad
for those fifteen rivers
and those fifteen moons that once existed

Right at this moment
Fifteen lovers have parted ways --
each shedding fifteen crystal drops of tear
Right at this moment
Fifteen flowers have wilted in that sorrow

Right at this moment
Fifteen eagles have perched atop the sun
watching the world go round
Right at this moment
Fifteen elves are seated below the sun
watching the sky fly away

Right at this moment
I have posed fifteen question marks
for me to wonder why
Right at this moment
Those fifteen question marks
are hitting back at me with their sharp edges

But all these had happened before…

Another Child

Downhill and downhill, bitten
but not smitten
Lonesome knight, further, ahoy,
shorn and scorn
The cup is not full yet,
Far away, the fields are green
The sunflowers – like a merry dream
But for nothingness, nothing persists
For the sky the sea is blue
And the tired dreams too…

Singer, sing a song for me !
Jester, crack a happy joke,
For the matinee show
has been a sellout,
though everyone knows the story
of Rumpelstiltskin …

Twilights too shallow to whisper
Darkness too dead to die
There’s a brook down the valley
There’s an inn with bread and wine
There’s a cottage where a candle burns
There’s a girl to love and love…
Solitude not so dreary as once dreaded
The moon might shine, it might not…

Truth be told, I fear death
Cold blue light in an empty room
The parrot flutters in a golden cage
Someday, it won’t flutter anymore
The diamond shines with all its edges
Someday, it won’t shine anymore…

Downhill and downhill, further, ahoy,
The spear is blunt, the horse is thirsty,
The knight is weary, but the crusade’s over…

Fever-induced Articulations on Doom

Last night when I was sleeping my last sleep
Under the last roof of my last shelter –
I dreamed my last dream…

I saw the last flower being
burnt on the last pavement
I heard the last note of the last saxophone
being throttled to silence by the last gunshot

I saw two blind children being crushed under
the boot-heels
I heard their last mortal shrieks melting the
thin dark mist

I saw the last beggar being dragged to the gallows
I heard his last moans being gobbled up by
the last halo of the leper moon

I saw the last sons of the last bitches
playing with gunpowder –
their fingers showed their bones
I heard them shouting the last F-word
which crept past the last blue dungeon
of the last train – like a caterpillar

I saw the last gypsy lady reading
the Metamorphosis of Ovid aloud –
her smile faded out into the womb of the tonic-night
The words played around like an endless ring
of smoke and vapour and fume and such other
shit…

I saw the last teenager googling “Armageddon”
for the first time
I heard him whistling all his hopes away – he
whistled sharp and smart but he had no
lover

I saw the last poet writing his first poem
on love, and burning the pages away
I heard the last owl hooting thrice behind his
window pane…

I saw the last lovers parting for the first time
I heard their tears dripping down with the rain
into the last gutters where the last pile of filth
floated away to the silence of the doves’ breasts

I saw the last military tanks waiting, like
Vladimir and Estragon did for Godot,
to boom out for one last time
I heard their metal wheels ravishing
the shapely bosom of the virgin streets –

I saw the streets bleeding with the pain
of the final Resurrection that never happened
I heard them crying for the last piece
of the freedom-cake that the vagabond night
had preserved for them

I saw the last silent procession of men and women –
Like fallen soldiers they had been hoodwinked
by the falsities of faith hope and love
I heard the march of their feet rhyming
with the clamour of the chains of passion
that had bound them to the doom
of eternity

I saw the last holy book being dumped
at the garbage can
as the last litany swirled its way
up to the tired stars and nebulae

I saw the fumes from the burning river
bringing down the last darkness of the last night
I heard funeral sermon of the last old God
who had finally died…

And then – nothing, nothing, nothing…

400 Blows - My Thoughts

Truffaut’s 400 Blows. I have seen the movie thrice, the first time being when I was sixteen, and it never ceases to make me feel disturbed.
I could relate myself very much to the young protagonist of the movie – Antoine, because like him, I myself used to have a trail misunderstandings following me everywhere – at home and at school.
Of course, I have grown out of these feelings now, but still I feel touched by the subtle way the entire film, with all it’s complexities of children moving apart from their parents and the emotional ties and attachments disappearing in the post World War II European societies, with the nuclear families becoming the norm and individualism and existentialism being the catchword, nay, the shibboleth , of the urban middle and lower middle class families.
The character of Antoine is a representative of all the children in such similar situations – childhood being converted into a scapegoat to be sacrificed at the alter of existentialism. It was, and still is, an age of innocence being lost, and morality being spat upon in the face, by children and grown-ups alike. Antoine never thinks twice before giving the false alibi of his mother’s death as the reason for his missing class. Or maybe, just maybe, he does think twice, he does hesitate for a while, signifying the battle between morality and the morbid individualist existentialism…
What Camus’s Meursault, in The Outsider, had while declaring the death of his mother in the famous opening lines of the novel was honesty – naked honesty, and Truffaut’s Antoine had the same honesty too. Because to him, his mother is dead indeed, or may be that she never existed to him, and, looking at the picture from the other side of the glass, he never existed to his mother. This is because he had overheard his mother telling his stepfather that she wanted to have an abortion, only that her mother didn’t let that happen…
Maybe that’s what this state of Being and Nothingness all about… The underlying theme of 400 Blows is existentialism. But unlike Bergman’s Silence, which, too, was shown from the perspective of a child, this one is presented in a light manner. And all the despair and hopelessness and pathos in the movie remains hidden behind a cloak of childish innocence and exuberance. But at times the cloak gets lifted, and we can see the nude flesh, like when Antoine, while skipping his class and walking around the city with a friend of his, sees his mother locked in the arms of her office colleague, walks past casually as if nothing has happened and when his friend asks him “that wasn’t him (your father)?”, Antoine nonchalantly replies – “never saw him before”…
And the scene of three little girls, hardly four of five years old, locked up in an iron cage and staring at the older boys playing at the Juvenile correctional centre – complementing and perhaps supplementing the earlier scene of three grown up women, presumably prostitutes, locked up in the police station, is bound to send streams of slow and ice-cold shudders running through the spines of the viewers. Together, these two scenes represent innocence, being locked up in a secluded cage, staring at guilt and the ennui of hopeless fear, as described aptly by Baudelaire in Les Fleurs du Mal – “C'est l'Ennui! —l'Å“il chargé d'un pleur involontaire”. This was perhaps the underlying theme of the entire movie. And I say ‘perhaps’ because this movie is like life itself – open to perspectives and interpretations – the objectivity of the flesh and blood
The scene of young Antoine being interviewed at the correctional home is another visual masterpiece. I’ve heard that for this particular scene, no written script was provided to the boy who played Antoine’s part. His facial expressions, the sudden quick glances, the gestures and movements of his hand – everything were real – there was no acting involved.
And one more piece of cinematic magic was the the medley of whirling faces staring down at the rotating chamber at the carnival. This scene reminds me of the immortal lines from The Hollow Men – “Shape without form, shade without colour / Paralysed force, gesture without motion…”. This was a celebration of life and lifelessness, like a brother and a sister, abandoned, standing on the roadside hand in hand and staring at all the geometrically vorticistic movements of straight lines, parabola and hyperbola – men and motorcars…
The essence of the movie is pure humour – something that brings out our smiles and tears simultaneously – like good old Charlie Chaplin staring out of the frame of City Lights – smiling and biting his finger with a rose in his hand. 400 Blows, to me at least, embodies all these feelings – those of smiles and tears, of the stream of never-ending hopelessness and despair, and the absurd happiness creeping out of all these like Camus’ Sisyphus
The character of Antoine Doinel in 400 Blows is a confluence of Ray’s Apu from Pather Panchali and Bergman’s Johan from Tystnaden (The Silence) and what we get as a result is not merely a product of cinematic genius of the highest order, but an embodiment of life in itself – with mirth and melancholy flowing like an eternal river. Many of the shots, scenes and sequences reminded me of yet another masterpiece by yet another master – Bari Thekey Paliye by Ritwik Ghatak…
And perhaps my vocabulary is not sufficient to describe the last shot of the movie, where Antoine has ran away from the Labour Station and on reaching the sea and realizing that there is no escape route from there, turns back and faces the audience and the camera freezes…It is as if he is staring at the audience, at the people, and his eyes search for their cold hearts…He is punished and caged – not merely by the Correctional Home or the Labour Station, not merely by the unfeeling society, but by the world at large – by the lack of empathy, and the infertile detachment of our existence – imprisoned by the stone corridors of eternity, stone corridors that have no life and no feeling, he has no option but to stare at the lifeless insides of us – the hollow men, the stuffed men – devoid of all feelings and compassion, leading an existence of nullity… All the modern man has is a chain of present-moments – no past and no future, and an intense fear of the unknown, Antoine in 400 Blows, like Johan in Tystnaden explores these innermost fears…The innocence of these little children is something that is feared by the those who have embraced this existentialist mode of living (or maybe, not-living)…for innocence strikes like thunderbolts and declares a jihad against the guilt-ridden interiors of a fading morality… and the cold, lifeless whispers of this fear, of this intense horror wake us up in the middle of dead nights… at the Hour of the Wolf, and make us break into cold sweats…
The Horror…The Horror…

Silence, Love, and the Sparrows

Please don’t turn your face from me,
When it rains real hard
Shine for me, O Shine for me,
When the sun gets all covered up

In the glint of the snowflakes
Let me feel your eyes,
For the sky is all fog and smoke
And the thunder brings no surprise

But the night, it wilts away
Like the flowers of your silent smile;
I’m tired, tired, walking all day
Hold me in your arms for a while

See the old man, drowning in sorrow
Clutching his old violin
He knows there’s no tomorrow
Every day is today for him

See the young boy, eating his pears
Sitting at the branch of the magic tree
He stares at the sky and discovers his tears
As he sees the sun going down into the sea

Evening falls like a drop of tear
Floating across the lonesome valleys
In the gypsy tents they gather around fire
And listen to the wise man’s stories

Shine on me, for the moon is down
It’s cold outside and the fire is dead
Take my scepter, take my crown
And give me some love instead

But I need to fight, I need to conquer
The loveless kingdoms beyond the sea
Promise me that if I fall in the war
You’ll spare a sigh and a rose for me

An Ode to a Hypothetical Classmate

In the distant provinces
There lives a pretty princess
I see her in faint glimpses
In beautiful dreams

She is like Hamlet’s Ophelia
She is like a winter Dahlia
She is like a Christmas Camellia
She reminds me of chocolate ice-creams

She has a strange light in her eyes
She is fond of butterflies
She must be a fairy in a lady’s guise
And her whispering voice breaks up in a thousand sighs

I have no words to describe her face
She is the epitome of beauty and grace
She wears a purple moonlight dress
And she steps out of a photograph by Arthur Tress

Indeed she’s a pretty lass
She sits right next to me in class
And I might sound a little crass
But she has a boyfriend, alas !

Rasputin

Rasputin sat beside the Rubicon
With a cup of hemlock in his hand
Evening was falling like silent tears
The sky was drunk with crimson mist

He stared across the river’s breast
He saw the wild flames leaping up
Two dragon-flies sat atop the flames
Rasputin laid his sword of faith down

In a shimmering pyre of solitude and wood
He saw the bones of Joan of Arc shriveling
When the horses in the stable became restless
Rasputin spat between the eyes of Revolution

Beneath a leafless and lonesome yew tree
He saw History playing cards with Death
And the little boy who knew all about destiny
Strummed his balalaika in the empty valley

And by the time the chandeliers were lit
The theatre and the cathedral were dead
The seven wise men – they were clueless
For the moon had stolen the missing piece

Jesus of Nazareth – he was nailed to his cross
The five blind Jews carried him across Rubicon
And a dead brown leaf whispered to my feet
‘Did the faithless faith healer cross the river too?’

An Autobiography

Do they still sing my name
under the starry sky?
Do they still find my name
etched in the stars?
Do they still hear my whispers
when the wind writes her poetry
over the desert sands?
Do they remember the irony
I invented once when the moonlight
reached the haunted barn
and disturbed the dreams
of the brooding pigeons?
Perhaps not
But I was a God once,
till the temptation of flesh
became too strong for me to resist…

And now, only the silence
can afford to sing my name
Only the great nothingness
beyond the seven seas can
fill itself with my confirmation
of existence
Only the corpses with their
lice-infested skulls and the

mummies with their petrified
flesh can remember me,
For once, I was their God
For once, my hand used to
point their path to the grave
And now, the deserted stone-corridors
of the catacombs and the pyramids
whisper my name in the naked

silence of eternity and doom

The seven frozen children
stare at me from across the mirage
with their eyes full of the last

moment of life as it left them
with their eyes full of the first

moment of death as it entered them
But my only terror is that
there is no love or hatred

in those eyes…
They were the seven children
of my seven deadly passions…
I married the seven sins, and
each bore me a child…
And after the last one was sired,
a great misty veil of silence came
down from the heavens and engulfed
me into the wombs of my very first
mother – her name was Darkness

I lost my crown of thorn, I lost my
kingdom of moonborne dreams
I became empty, empty like a
leafless maple covered with winter-frost
And as I lay chained in the bastille of my
passions, I saw my children die…

And now the owl sends her condolences
to the moon by hooting out thrice every
midnight, and for three seconds, the moon
wears the cloudy veil of a silent widow…

Clocks tick on,
Angry moths spit between the hungry

eyes of lizards
Soldiers empty their machineguns
in the empty stomachs of starving

children and fatigued saints
Eternal nothingness waits like

a seasoned stalker
in the padded paws of a cat which
she licks whenever a mouse

is spotted
Revolution squanders in empty

liquor bottles
as those red ants make a feast with

cow dung
And the world trembles between

my dusty boot-heels
with desperate pain, striving to find a voice
The new gods want me to kneel down
and repent, so that I can join their league

I refuse to hear…

A Small Gift

I fear looking at my own image in the mirror
Especially those eyes
Yet I spend hours and hours in front of
mirrors… and the eyes from the other side –
they keep on staring at my transparent self,
right inside me…
And that sure gives me the creeps
At times I ask myself – which one
of the two is real ? The one inside
the mirror, or the one outside?
I’ve been trying to find a way out
of this labyrinth for quite some
time now…

I am a joker
And like all jokers, I have
sad eyes and a face that smiles
vacantly out of the empty mist
And I play a saxophone sometimes
And like all saxophones, it sounds
like a nightingale in a lonely valley
But wherever I go and whatever
I do, I drag my purple self with me
Like the moon dragging the violet
clouds at midnight…

Perhaps someday I will smash
all the mirrors
Perhaps someday I will stop smiling
But till then I plan to keep myself
entertained with all the treasures
I have dug out of life –
the dearest among them being happiness
Well, I guess that’s what living is all about

"Conversations with the Executioner" or "Self Negation"

Poet?
No, just an old fashioned hypocrite
Crito, we owe a cock to Asclepius
Let him have it then !
Acta est fabula, plaudite, plaudite…
But what’s the point?
He waited, so did she
Who there chants in my ears?
Believe in epitaphs?
Don’t turn the lights off, please!
Sad memories of childhood?
No, just a façade to hide behind
Any unfulfilled ambitions?
Next question please
Sighs? Tears?
By Jove, what are those things?
You seem to be drowning, old pal
No, no, just escaping the mirrors
Shall there be no faces to smile at?
That’s entirely upto you
And who shall join the procession?
None, except my own mocking selves
Any last wishes?
Here lies a presumptuous fly
trapped in amber for five
thousand years, pretending
to be alive
Set it free…set it free...

Odyssey, Nocturn

The day doesn’t have any wonders

It’s the night – that fades
like skeletal nuclear stones with
the rendezvous of the falling stars …

It’s the night – that withers away
like dry pages of the book of apostrophes
with the running paradigm of the clocks
that show the mortality of desires …

It’s the night – that dilutes through
the test-tube womb of the mother
of destiny with the trembling ethos
of the long-lost dungeons of despairing
happiness …

It’s the night – that disappears
like the misty grey purple covering
the blind God in his heavenly light
with the empty multitude of the
absurd dawn …

It’s that passing night that brings
me closer to the silent image that
resides across the empty canvas

of my evanescent eternity

An Ode to My Ego

And now I shall write the poetry
of dreary solitudes and windshaken
twilights

For the windowpanes are singing
the song of the drowning man
in death- whispers

For the leaves are shed,
and the sinuous tree is naked
in its faithless belief

For the keys of the piano
hide wounds of mortal love
and wrap the agony up
in the feigned ecstacy of harmony

For the silent machineguns are singing
the song of the lifeless mannequin
with the rhythmic silence
of the stone-drunk corridors
in echoes of lost words
meant to be spoken everafter

For I have found out that the fire
purifies my words by turning them
into ashes and smoke

For I have been deaf and mute
since the time time was born

For my naked fingers dance
with the drumbeats of the
soundless carnival hanging
from the cocktail waves
of the mocking-bird’s plume

For the nightingale becomes silent
after singing out once

For I am tired, tired, chasing
parched mirages, cracked images
and blue lights

For I have been waiting in vain
for the wind to erode these
cold dead rocks away

For the eyes of dead fishes
swim around the alter of
my dreamless quintessence
and the currents meet
under the seven-sea-waters

For my tears have forsaken me
and I am left with this…this
vast desert where I have been
ordained to raise a garden
of the first Green

And hence, my friends, I lay down
my wreath of cactus flowers
at the feet of the trembling despair
of the approaching evanscence
of the three infallible hands
of my wallclock

It’s half past four in the morning

Calcutta Unbound

Long faded footsteps –
history books are silent,
but you can hear them
if you press your ears
against the mossy brickwalls
decorated with myriad
handbills and posters
and faded paint,
or if you walk along
those sunless alleys
where the stench of
bleak sewer-pipes
descend…
If you look closer –
into the rain-soaked grounds,
you’ll see hoofmarks on
the three hundred year old
mud…

Pilgrims, bandits, butchers,
saints, nawabs, thinkers,
poets, soldiers and Governor Generals –
they whisper together,
along the hanging roots
of the banyan tree
which has seen much blood
and has weathered many storms
Don’t disturb them now
Don’t wake their spirits up now…

Can you hear the rain falling
on the gutters
of the dark bylanes of
the mystic-drunk-red eyed
brothels?
All the raindrops that have fallen
for the last three hundred
years have sounded the same…
Can you hear a gunshot
echoing through the death-black night?
That’s Warren Hastings shooting
Philip Francis down,
or maybe the police
shooting some revolutionaries
down…
All the same
The entire history of the city
has been written around
the soundless nights,
the chain being broken
at times by the howl of dogs,
eerie shrieks from the neighbourhood,
the whistle of the nightguard
and the occassional distant
thunderclaps and lightning-streaks…

The river bears testimony
to all the tears, laughter,
oil and tar the city
has ever seen…
If you go to the riverside,
you’ll find an old man
in rags, smoking –
his gaze seems distant
and the lines of his face
tell stories of their own;
He stares
at the chimney-smoke-hazy
horizon – reddened by the sunset…
You’ll see the sun drowning
in the river,
as the old man
and the two bridges look on,
silently…
The river…the sleepless patrol…

But the sun will rise again,
tomorrow, like it did yesterday
For hope never dies in this city…

This is my city,
This is my nest,
It breathes in me
I breath in it
It flows through my restless veins,
and roots down deep inside
like the incessant sound
of the primitive trams
dragging themselves along
the dusty tracks
towards eternity, like turtles
like turtles

Wasted Waves

“I am the daughter of the sea” –
she said
Her hair was wet
Her lips were thirsty
Her face shone with froth and sand
The sand was black

She was the daughter of the sea
The sea was in her eyes
The salt was in her breath
The sun was about to set
She was the sunset

The waves danced about, wearing
little crowns of foam
Civilizations rose and fell with the tides
Seagulls dotted the red horizon
The sea was red, glinting
with pieces of the broken sunset
The shore was blue, blue and blue
She was the daughter of the sea
And her voice was a rainy night

Fairytales and hummingbirds buried
themselves in the sand, with oysters
and crabs The eyes of the whirlpool
saw phosphorus dreams and salt
Kings and crowns were busy chasing
mirages Her hair was wet

Her body was caged in the twilight
of foam and mist
She had no clothes on
Seagulls do not build their nests
They follow the masts…

She was the daughter of the sea
She became the water
She became the salt
She became the wave
She washed the shore
The sand was black

She stretched out her hands
And she touched my fingers
And my fingers…my fingers…
felt the waves

I touched the sand
And the blue cyanide from
the black sands clung to my fingers
My fingers felt the cyanide
I touched her lips --
soft, like an oyster's belly
with the pearls within

We kissed, we kissed
The kiss of eternity
The eternity that wears
the black hood, the
shapeless, formless mask of death
and rides on the back of a turtle
We kissed
Her eyes were silent
in the twilight

The waves danced like a carnival
wearing a garland of skulls
The carnival of blood and sand
was soundless in mirth
We kissed

And then I flew back to my nest
Evening was creeping through
Darkness fell

Desires

When I become the sun,
let me shine on you
When I become the moon,
let me smile at you
When I become the stars,
let me wink at you
When I become the rain
let me fall on you
When I become the snow,
let me cling to your hair
When I become the breeze,
let me caress your face
When I become the sky,
let me cover you up
When I become the wine,
let me touch your lips
When I become a flute,
let me sing to you
And when I become a heart
let me throb for you

To Love

For your heart I give my empty kingdom
For your soul I give my crown of thorn
For your eyes I give my starless nights
For your smile I give my burning tomorrow
For your tears I give the my poison blood
For your body I give my hopeless desires

But for you I have nothing to give

The Story of the Other Storm

I believed in the nude goddess of the dark
The darkness became my flesh
And like moss fern and lichen,
a world sprung up on the very flesh
Very flesh
Blood flowed through my rivers
Tribal drumbeats deafened the silence
of my heart
And like microcosmic reminders of infinity,
corpuscles danced madly to those beats
Beats Beast Keats Kissed
Hissed Pissed Missed
by a few miles, missed in the multifoliate
of the black rose – womb, womb
Future’s tomb
I entered through that door
like a husband and like a son
For I believed in the nude goddess…

Is it that very flesh and blood
that build up our days and nights?
That built up Leda, that built up the Swan?
Is it from this very darkness, this
wet darkness, that the future leaps
out towards the fountain of light?

History answers these question
every day
As the children of Adam and Eve
push on and on, in search of a
piece of sweet eternity…
The snake and the fruit and the tree
are but fairy tales
What matters is the throbbing warmth
And the rain that follows…

I thought of these as I lay half asleep
And oblivious of the bed of thorn…
Holy currents were flowing by
And a swan and a paper boat floated along
downstream, downstream…
A storm was raging outside
And the other storm – inside…

Hope

When it was dark and lonely
stars floated on the water
And the moon hid the owl
Under the sleeves of her long
white robe, we set sail

As the darkness rose and fell
with the tides and the wavering
Oars – the eyes glinted beneath
Eyes of fishes, fishes
Fishes never close their eyes
Down by the whirpools,
the jaded out solitudes became
one with God, and clung to the
nothingness, and we set sail

Layers of darkness had gathered
over the night sky, accumulated
throughout the centuries, as little
men and women were busy
knitting the history of the night
Darkness is nothing but the robe
of the King of night, solitude
is his crown, and eternity is his skeptre
We rowed through the night
Silence fell like raindrops from
the starlight,
The stars – they stay
close to the kingdom of dreams,
Dreams floated on around us,
Like the halo around the moon
In the waters we could see
the blazing image of Prometheus
His eyes were burning with the
Passion he had stolen from Zeus
And we rowed on…

The waters trembled between
our oars like the absurd happiness
of Sisyphus when he saw the stone
rolling down
The world rested on our palms,
And hope and faith rested on our
dusty boot-heels,
We were the faithless fanatics
In search of light, love and happiness
Like a drop of rain from the
heart of the steadfast firmament
Waiting for Oedipus to sigh and say :
“I conclude that all is well”

The night, the darkness, the solitude
and the starlit waters revolved round
one single moment – and that moment
of bodhi came down like
all the love that comes down from
the heavens to the earth to proclaim
the Kingdom of Eternity in our hearts...
And God said – Let there be Light
And there was Light, Twilight,
dotting the first pages of the Day,
Green, fading by our borders
Visible through the canvas
of the same Flesh and Blood
That makes up the Divine world
That makes up the tombstones
That makes up the First Light,
the First Sight, the First Sound

We saw an old man
digging the dust for gold
We saw a child
sweeping the blue skies
for a penny
And we saw a primrose
dancing all by herself
We heard the innocence of
the breeze over the forlorn
passes of the Himalayas,
We heard the mournful songs
of Philomela, songs about
long lost kingdoms and dreams…

Such were the first Sights
and Sounds of the Day that
was destined to fly on the wings
of the nascent Hope…

We thanked Pandora as we rested our oars
The shores were new and green

Zero Tolerance Zion

Everyone doing something
Breathing, eating, dreaming,
Staring upwards through the skylight
Sleepy eyes, floating dreamwards bound
Poet, muse, mystic, haha gibberish
matchboxes with nomadic operational hazards
Lazy times, lazy squirrels like a caterpillar
with broken back
Black and white clockhands
Seven sea sands with sea monsters
and Beethoven with the night of the narcissistic stonehenge
Antagonist, Agnostic…

Golden Monkeys – they stay in the sky

Upper regiment with broken ribcages
Minuites, hours and seconds standing at the door
Reflected in the mirror
Fire leaping up, bellowing like a
hushed up aristocratic scandal
Ministers and councils advice the king
The king of frogs – his voice is hoarse
and cracked from incessant croaking

Golden Monkeys – they chatter in the sky

The door of my cupboard is cracked as well
And in that crack cockroaches reside
The kingdom of the cockroaches – they have a king too
And they have a god named Gregor Samsa
And a holy book called The Metamorphosis
Parallel to the edges of the multi-angular dryness of the crack
Darkness sets up his unabashed throne
Darkness has a wife named eternity
Eternity has a paramour named religion

Golden Monkeys – they eat the stardust

Cobwebs filter the hollow vacant nudity
Numbness of the frostbite grows free
Unrestrained by the monarch’s big toe and the dog-eared lawbooks
that state nil nisi bonum
Windows keep on staring inside
the pale of the moon and the skyworn
sickness of lovelorn Rasputin and the
frittering fickleness of meat and bread
Waves, echoes, boredom, ennui
and Revolution thrashes on the washed feet of
the Apostle – he has lices in his beard
Food for all, shelter for all, hope for a few…

Golden Monkeys – they drink the moonshine

Droplets of wine, poison fire fuming
down the chimneys and tunnels and
fireplaces where greyhounds meditate the
passion of the minstrel of paradigm
and holiness of picric acid gulped down
in hollowed out moments of vacuous
hypnotism and agoraphobic Philomela
Tapping the sidewalks of the democracy of
jesters and troubadours, down the slope,
into the valley of Bob Marley

Golden Monkeys – they tried to bite the sun but their throats got burnt

Canals of the passing monotheists dive dream
down deep Don Quixote windmills windmills
Don Quixote Ringing for a drop of heaven
and a dip in the rivers
with the wombs full of fire
and ashes and wanderlust and Armageddon
thirsty for a piecemeal antique of the thoroughbred
subterranean suffering from Oedipus complex
and Jocasta’s dilemma silence of Sophocles
says a thousand words of the confusion passing
the pallid ardour of the whirlpool, ceasing,
open-fire, castrate the bastards Love of a woman,
mother, wife, daughter, love, struck by
John Henry’s hammer aching shoulders and
mourning dynamos of the impetus behind motion
and existance of duality and public information
counting days like philatellic verses

Golden Monkeys – they fell off the sky

She sang to me a lovely song
She sang to me a lonely song
She was from Venus and she loved me crazy
She gave me a plastic rose

And the Golden Monkeys fell asleep

Rain

Like first love, rain came
Inara Serra - she stays across the streets
Waiting for yet another loveless night
Sold out for a handful of penny when she was twelve
Sister of sacrifice, child of hunger, bride of lust
People call her the fallen woman
People made her fall
Her helplessness is her sin,
And her redemption lies in her submission…
To her, the rain means nothing but
the wet, warm smell of a long faded
childhood…
The rain makes her sad
Yet, like first love, rain came

Like first love, rain came
Ahasver – he rests for a while
under my window, his bootheels are
muddy now
He has been rambling across
the world for many years
and is doomed to ramble for many more
People call him the Wandering Jew
People pity him too
He has seen and heard everything
And he can still see and hear
But his senses are covered with the
dust and dirt of two thousand odd years
He didn’t feel the summer fury
And he doesn’t feel the soothing raindrops either
To him, the rain means nothing but
the thirsty expectation of the Second Coming
The rain makes him thirsty…
Yet, like first love, rain came

Like first love, rain came
My neighbour – she’s an old lady
And she stays all alone
I can see the pale yellow light
from her window
She’s knitting her wool
And her pet shepherd dog
is lying on the rug, close to her feet
With his drooping toughtful eyes
and his morose chin resting on his paws
The dog’s pretty old too…
Once there was a war,
her son went to fight,
and never returned
But no letter from the army came
And so she kept on waiting
And she waits even to this day
People spared a few drops of tear for her
People forgot her pretty soon
Her own tears have dried up from inside
Now she spends her time
knitting sweaters for her son
To her the rain means nothing but
staring vacantly outside the window
for a few brief seconds
and emitting a short dry sigh
The rain doesn’t fall on her…
Yet, like first love, rain came

Beliefs and Nightmares

The twilight believed in the day,
The desert believed in the mirage,
The drowning man believed in a piece of straw
floating by,
Leviathan believed in his King…

As the deafening silence echoed across
the stone corridors at night,
The eerie martyr believed in his blood…

Time, running between Zero
and Eternity, was fading by
the mossy wetness of the dark
womb of historical absurdity, of
angels, demons and fireflies,
of mice, of men, of leeches and maggots…

When a flash of Light blinded the mind
of the Creator, the Created and everything
else in tenterhooks and hindsight
Hope got trampled down the staircase
of Odessa
Faith was dangling down a vicious
greyhound’s teeth,
with dripping blood and chlorine…

Stories of life and death, of hope and
butchery took birth, floating by the
absinthe of fire and mayflower…

Laughter ran high, cutting through
the remnants and the ruins of the
bedouin bridge that once joined
the entrails of Gargantua and
Pantagruel
Shattering the mockery of
Innocence, of Time and Death
The scorched earth, filled with
the sullen temerity of conceptions,
development and Destiny…

Deathly whispers flew around
the fireplace, riding high on the
wings of suicidal moths
The single moments trembled on
the rainbow of the timeless times
and the rhymeless chimes of sonority…

The dice rolled
We were burning
And our collecive beliefs -- those

were burning too --
Burning in the cold blue neon light…

Life – left dry, hard
bitter and cold, with the first
pain of birth…
High by the progenies of
supposed miracle
the single room,
with its walls covered by
tattered pictures of Cactus
and cobwebs eating through
the tentacles of the morose
awakenings…
waiting for the day,
or at least for light
Might be the sun, might
be electricity…

Hazy fragments and tuberculosis
from benzaldehyde or Kekule
dreaming of snakes and Freud
dreaming of his mother…

The lonely nights keep us awake
And whispers, moans, screams

and tolling church-bells
which only we can hear in the
darkness drop down from
the bleeding heavens to our
burning foreheads…
Darkness takes the shape of
Fairy Godmother and pays
her nightly visits to Cinderella
to collect her dream-rent and
belief-rent…

Darkness, Fairy Godmother, Freud…
Faithless screams and burning passions
take the concrete yet abstract
shapeof belief
As moss grows on the corpse of
one whole generation lost
in the sea of directionless tidings
and the same videotape being
played backwards over and over…

Cras credemus, hodie nihil
Cras credemus, hodie nihil
Cras credemus, hodie nihil

Porcupine, porcupine, porcupine…

Preludes and Afterthoughts

When I live to live no more,
When I love to love no more,
When my nightingale refuses to sit
in Your Garden of Agony and Ecstacy,
When the first raindrops fall on Your blushing
rose-petals
And Your moist eyelashes glisten in the first light
of the dawn
Remember the boy who once used to strum his balalaika
for You…

O Grave, Where is Thy Victory?

I’ve walked, numb, through infinite possibilities
and purgatories
Like the crucifix – visible through soul searching reminders
And opportunities, squandered
I’ve looked across the shooting stars of a
sleepless city, contemplating the
pallor of dead maidens’ cheeks, turning my
nightmares cold, and freezing the hysteria
of the aces, kings, queens and jacks…
The stepping stones of light and stardom –
they’ve waved at me, like shadows from
the other kingdom kissing the dawn
Sexless solitudes have caught up with me
and naked angels with pistols have shot

me down many a times…

Caliban has chased me out of the tempest
I’ve heard the dirge from the lost inferno
raising its head out of the whirlpools
of hopelessness
Many rose petals have fallen on my feet,
mistaking me for God

The howl of dogs shattering the midnight silence
and reverberating through my spine made me happy
And the clitoris of nymphetamine crying out

for my forked poison-tongue made me sad…
And I’ve seen my happiness and sorrow
having sex on the pavements of Sodom…

I’ve raked through the fireplaces of
unknown people in search of charred
remnants of torn pages from the last
holy book…
Madly in love with Vulcan, I’ve
trembled through the smouldering
passions of Dante and the sighs of Petrarch
I’ve spent my nights pressing my ear
against the sidewalks to hear the wailing
saxophone from underground
I’ve spent my days waiting for the holy sign
and crying
eli eli lamma lamma sabacthani !”

Like a misspent sixpence, my twilights --
they created me as the foster child of
lost and forbidden desires.
Prophesies ring out like
telephones and through the cracks of
the walls carry the forebodings of
eternity in their wombs…

As I stared at the fluttering mayhems
of my own canvas,
thinking about David and Jonathan,
thinking about nightingales,
horizons and the dear departed,
like a dead man looks at life,
Light crept in through
my broken windowpane, held
my little finger and led me to
the solitary dawn of the first day of the world…

And then enlightenment arrived

like the pedantic realization that
the only thing that I can call my own
is a drop of tear

Summersong

Looking outside the window
A still quiet afternoon sky
Tufts of bohemian clouds
And the copper April sun…

It’s too hot to dream
But like the ceaseless
woodpecker, I can’t
afford to become too busy
expecting the rain

Dancing with rhythmic reveries,
The world needs water to survive.
Veins – throbbing and feverish,
Phlegm and melancholia, like
incestuous brother and sister --
Sensual, like summer vacations

Thinking of all oddities and ennui
It comes, like an inconsistent gust
of wind…
The realization that I’ve never been
untrue to my own flesh and blood…

April, afternoon
The sun keeps on blazing through the rooftops
Dreams take the shape of inspirations
Inspirations hide behind the façade of poetry
And like chaotic possibilities,
fever creeps up…

Unforeseen

The purple clouds whispered to me a purple dream
of restless symphonies and golden eagle’s eyes
And I could hear the trembling sighs of the candlelight,
lonely like the rain and the cherry tree ...
The parrot in my golden cage - she fluttered to be free…
It was then that I realised how much you’ve bled for me

To Lorca

Your gypsy moon seeps
through my night sky
I hear the moan of the corpses
at the dead of night,
And the garland of my freshly cut tears
decorates the margins of my heart…
It’s true that I do not know my own geometry,
And I shatter my mirrors with my axe,
But the perfume you smelt –
Of that dark magnolia, of that womb…
I can smell that too…

You wanted to be a heart
And they tore it apart…
The green valleys of Andulasia
are red with your blood today
You wanted to be a nightingale
And they shot it down…
But it’s mournful songs still fill the Spanish nights
For they couldn’t kill the songs…

I was looking for my voice
in a drop of water
And you gave me your silence –
A ring – for my little finger

I worship you, with my flowers…
And my flowers are nothing but the
sadness of Cyrano and Quixote

I saw you, as you came bleeding from the
gates of Cabra, wishing to die decent
on your bed…
But they didn’t let you do that…
And I heard your sighs…
They rang out like frozen screams…

As the moon crept up the sky
The bells stopped tolling
Water from the seven seas
washed the earth, and
I saw your heart, trembling,
like a lonely island surrounded
by Eternity…
I lost my way, and I reached the frozen
kingdom…
As I trampled over the grasses that
had grown over the twentyone dumb centuries
I heard your thousand violines
and saw your muted tears…

Every clock showed five, I remember
So did every twilight of every dusk
While you were crying for Ignacio
The gangrene raised it’s head
And you forbade the moon to rise
For you did not want to see his blood…

The gangrene stabbed you too
And you too fell…

We stood and stared as the most
beautiful flower of Spain fell
to the dust
And we did nothing…

For we were the archers
And we were blind, like love
On that night of anise and silver
That shone, like it still shines
On the streams and the mirrors
Of our lonely nights, our rooftops
And we were too busy listening
to the starless silence fleeing from
the rhythmic tambourine of Precosia…
As the gypsy moon, the parchment
moon, glided on her ballads…

Then your poet friend – he shouted out
“Come and see the blood in the streets!”
“Come and see the blood in the streets!”
“Come and see the blood in the streets!”
We rushed out, and you were there
no more…
We couldn’t find you,
But neither could they
And in their wrath, they
broke down the churches, cupboards, graveyards
and barrels…
They snatched the golden teeth off three broken
skeletons,
Yet they could not find you…

Years have passed,
Death for piano has painted all
the little boys blue…
And your flute still plays
beyond the horizons, bloodsheds and
breezes of the bohemian cities
where the flags still flutter at the
street corners,
and black horses with black hooves
stand, and the three Sultans of Persia
stare, with wonder in their eyes
at the virgin wearing her almond neckless
and her chocolate-wrapper dress…

Tell me, Poet, tell this to me,
Did you find what you were searching for?
Did you seek in your heart for the
ivory letters that say “siempre” ?
Where have you gone, Poet?
Where did you vanish?
Did you go to the first picture?
to the water, to the rustling autumn leaves,
to the newborn, where the black-eyed
frosts fail to reach?
Are you floating around in the first breeze
of love and sand, above the crowd of
the boats, above the empty riverbed?
Have you gone to the Green that you love?
To the balcony, where she dreams with
her cold silver eyes?

The careful river, the little lonely
brook…
Perhaps you’re there, perhaps
you have found her warm heart…
But I won’t go searching for you
For I am a flutist
and I’m not wanted there
I’ll be a woodman, and I’ll
cut your shadow down,
for that’s what you wanted…

And I’ll leave your balcony open
So that you can see the little
boy eating his orange, and hear
the reaper harvesting the wheat
on the lush fields of Granada…

Poet, I know that you’re not dead
You’re only sleeping awhile –
a minuite, a century…
And dreaming of the apples …
And you’re dreaming of not dreaming
Within the cascade…
For I can still hear your guitar,
weeping…
Beyond the tents, across the
lonely Malagueña nights
And I know that
the rose didn’t want the dusk
And the two black pigeons
you loved – they were the sun and the moon…

Missal, Unfinished

(I)
Across the desert is Ithaca
And we wait for Ulysses to cry
Meanwhile, a little black kitten crawls
towards the dry pages of my
gypsy nights…
I’ve never stepped on the same
moment twice
and Heracletus will know that best
Ten million rhapsodies dance by
the bonfire…
Fairies, whores, angels, fireflies,
Buddha’s drooping eyes,
Good old boogeyman, busy reading
120 Days of Sodom by the fireplace,
Hunchback of Notre Dame sharing
a cigerette with Dorian Grey as they
discuss the prospects of
immortality ,
The blind priest searching in his
pockets for a loaded revolver,
The slaves in the galley cheering out loud
as Giordano Bruno’s getting burned,
all tied up at the stake,
But we shall not protest,
For that’s the way Zarathustra Spake…
(II)
Know what, folks,
I’ve lost the key…
It’s a punishment
I’ve sinned…
I had fallen asleep when the
Crystal-gazing lady and the
Phantom of the Opera were
dancing a tango together…
But don’t worry, we’re all waiting
for the rain,
And that’ll come for sure…
(III)
My heart bleeds oil and tar, I know
But that’s all a part of the deal
I made with Mephistopheles while I was
gambling with him at a small tavern
off the minefields of Elysion…
(Had I won I would have owned
Gethsemane, but never mind)
I was banished to the East of Eden
where I met Adam and Eve
Busy making love since the
time the Bible was written…
But I managed to flee
And here I am, standing in
front of you,
seeking explanations
for not waiting for me
and moving along…
(IV)
I’ll let the fire burn
And I’ll let my one winged
parrot chirp on…

(V)

Ahoy there!
(VI)
N.B. the Flying Dutchman sets sail tomorrow….

Verily I say unto you...

In a broken temple by the riverside my lonely god stays
In a broken nightsky of a deserted city my lonely moon strays
And in my broken dream, the lonely god says
to the lonely moon – where are your rays?

The lonely moon – softly she cries
“I’m waiting for the poet who dies
At the end of a broken love story
For me to bask in the glory
Of unrequitted love – of dreams, dust and sighs…
Of truthful lies, and faithful butterflies…”

The lonely god – he replies
“I too am waiting…for the King to rise
I’m waiting for a roll of the dice
Some day a great rain will come, I know
But that day isn’t tomorrow…”

The god and the moon – they made love on the riverside
The rain fell, the poet died
And the King was reborn
Wearing his crown of thorn…

The valley of my dreams, it trembled in fear
Echoing through my sleep – I could hear
a thousand whispers, couldn’t make out what they said
I tossed and turned, and I prayed
I refused the ale, I refused the bread
And Satan – he unchained his beast
On Jesus’s flesh, it made it’s feast
His warm blood it drank
The great flood came and there was a carnage
Neptune unleashed his fury and rage
And Noah’s Ark sank
Heimdall’s horn – I heard it’s knell
Mothers cried, heroes fell
down – at the bottom of the wishing well…
I was shaken to the core
I could bear it no more…

Serapis winked and asked “ So what’s the deal?”
I replied – “ Why bother? Let’s go for the kill”
He gave me a knife – sharp and bright
I set out – on that disturbed night
I stabbed the moon, I stabbed the god
As I asked myself – “Did Homer nod?”

And Aaron – all bearded, wrinkled and old
He raised his rod – and to me he told
“Well done son,
You’re very brave
And now you can dig my grave
The days of your freedom have just begun
Set out now, don’t wait for the Sun…”

Since that night, since that fateful rain
I’ve never been to that eerie valley again
Across the world, I rambled and I strayed
In rain and sun, in light and shade
In search of ale, in search of bread
And in search of a thorny cactus bed
To lie down and rest when I’m dead…

One Wink Closer to Eternity

Nothing but empty snowflakes
And flowers for the memories --
too sacred to be worshipped
yet too profane to be indulged in…

As the wheels of unbroken time –
They keep rolling on in search
of yet another glorious
carnival
And hollow whispers…

Ah, but for my memories
They keep on falling
like ceaseless crusades,
like those mystic shadows over
the valley of dead dreams,
Tearing through these cobwebs
of the sonority of silence…

Like a fly, trapped,
And waiting for the glaciers
to melt…

Congruence…congruence…
Menagerie of words
Faces in the crowd
Raindrops and thistles
Dangling skulls
And echoing mirrors…

All those fairytales
of thousand Orpheuses living for
one single Eurydice to die…
Parsifals fooling around with
magicians, whores, knights and poets…

One world, one word,
One shithole
Just that, and you sleep
like a deaf man in a jamboree…

“So let us not talk falsely now
The hour is getting late” –
Thus spake the prophet
So it’s better that we
keep shut, and listen…

The world’s still round
for you and me, my love…
Only that my pen’s bleeding
blatant lies

But what can I do?
You see, I’ve been vainly searching
for solutions to illusions,
For lies that smell like truth…

Oh hopelessness ! you’re my only
hope
Oh faithlessness ! you’re my only
faith
Oh loneliness ! you’re my only
love

So that’s the way shadows
tumble,
That’s the way poets die
And that’s the way the
light reaches out
Melting through the ceaseless
stars, deaths and revolutions…

Immortality beckons
But I’m too tired
I need to sleep

Yes, I do indeed need some sleep
But I fear those nightmares…
those screeching nightmares
of naked truth and biting reality
They haunt me in my dreams
like warewolves.
I see fountains of blood
gushing out from the mouth
of the infidel goddess…

Mother… Mother…
You needn’t take this badge
from me,
Just take me back to your womb
The warmth… the eternal darkness…
That was the last place where I slept
in ethereal bliss, you know…
Dreamless…
Peace…Peace…Peace…

Drunk, Silent, Phantasmagoric

Storm and dust - raging throughout
the empty canvas of my heart
Roaring by my bullit aches...
In the feet of the dead Pharaoh
My worship and my flowers converse
By the ethos of the totemic mongrels
And the deserted prosceniums...
Sealed lips,
Bitter moon... waning orthodoxy of the words
Saladin's sword glinting in the naked sun
of the hatred that had burnt eversince....
Blatantly, loveless,... shaken like a charred
reverie from the morbid pages of history
As Hynkel the barber stands tall, with
Sisyphus and Harun-al-Rashid joining
the charade...

No point staying put now
For the platoons have fallen
And all poems are banished from the
kingdom of the prophets....
Let's just keep the fire burning,
(without giving a shit 'bout whether we
started it or not)
for our memories and our children
to feel the warmth...

Seamless, Dreamless...

Down here nights are grey
And heaven tumbles like tenpins
on the trembling summit of the one
who is free
Predestined hoarfrost
Prostitutes and angels lost in the
halogen maze
And distant rumblings of
the chained beast
turn into a glass-shattering
motorcade
and Assault Kalashnikov
and Agent Orange…

Poet –dead
Music – asunder
Bohemian – oversexed
So finally, the countdown begins
And the lonely saxophone wails out…

Voices and sounds soon disappear –
into the jet-black ether
And the dirge of the dead souls, lost
in this never ending blizzard of the
loveless pursuit for faith and hope…
…Night reigns… Caesar falls…

Smoky words dissolve the silence
Starving jokers with sad eyes
Starving poets with dreamy eyes
Starving prophets with brooding eyes
Starving tramps with happy eyes
Starving beggars without any eyes
-- they keep on digging the silence and the
darkness, in search of some
treasure-trove – which all have heard
about, but none knows what it is…

Suddenly, just plain suddenly,
The countdown ends
But nothing happens – no,
not yet, and perhaps never, and perhaps
Ever…
Not even a single candle-
flame flickers, unless of course there’s
a breeze or a moth dives into it

The stars, the mist, the silent waves
The raindrops, the tree-heads and the
mountaintops,
Fatalists digging for gold
Revolutionaries in love with gold
Poets in love with profit and loss
Phlebas the Phoenician in love
With heartbreaks and sighs…
after burying the dead…

So it is, and so it shall be
Hence, now let’s get used to
This numb pain of feeling no pain
This stuffed hollowness from within
And those little rainbow bubbles…

Every second the stars keep on
moving away from each other,
And the starlight, vainglorious --
racing against time to reach a given
point in space which is not there
Anymore

Poems, monads and fumes
Live in the Freudless dreams
And reason starts falling
apart, from the old moth-eaten wisdom
of the moon…
Let’s love to love no more
Not to love never, but ever,
To love forever
Or at least for one moment,
One wink, one detached
eyelash, floating with the snowflakes
Glinting… Teardrops… dewdrops…
A few drops…
Diamond…
But no rust,
Just plain pure diamond…

Bow down, for Anarchy has arrived
In the chariot of fire,
Bow, quiver, arrows and sword…
Eyes - glowing with passion and hate
Hair - flowing like the flame of Hades…
And now the lemon will be peeled
off, in one slash…

Glasses – broken
Leaves – shed
Music – jaded
Horizons – faded
Eliot – dead
Singers – tongues cut

So nothing remains to be stay
Nothing remains to say,
To be said, evermore
To be written in the epitaph
of they who went
And did not return anymore…
Pilgrims and sinners…

The equilibrium has come
Everything seems the same
Everything is the same…
No one dies, no one gets born
Nothing to mourn or to rejoice
No new songs to sing
or poems to write…
Avalanche… bitter moon…
Sleepy cactus eyes –
He’s coming.
Love to hate and
hate to love…
East of Eden, gift of the bosom
Of eternity…
Holy Ghost… Father, Son
Like a pack of cards…
Edifice built on the quicksand
Of time….
Night, kiss me
Kiss me, night…
I am your creator,
Embrace me, Morpheus….
Love, dream, hope, faith and sighs…
Arise, arise, O poet of the dark…
Arise…

Visions of a Mad Poet

Yesternight I bathed in you
And I can yet feel your moonlight
along the distant thundering horizons

Fading unto the darkness of some unknown
tomorrow… a tomorrow that never dies
A tomorrow that never comes but with
shattered epitomes of mortality
and clipped wings of hope that never was…

The fragrance of your love lingers
in my pillow, and in my forlorn dreams
Floating along the margins of my soul…

But now I’m ready to give you away
For now I live by the burning gasoline
of my sleepless eternity...

So now we must part ways
For you have wings and I have roots
Perhaps we shall meet again
At the crossroads of heaven, hell and destiny…
But then again, that’s merely a possibility

Yearnings

The primal desire is to be alone
To live and die in silence…
Loneliness in the womb
Loneliness in the grave
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust…
Oh, how I wish for the footsteps
To be silent…silent like the flowing time
Silent like the waves, the stars, the
moth eaten reality…too silent
to be called deafening…
And too lonely to be called
anything but love…silent love
Lonely tears… soldiers of desire
Dreams, lights dimmed out…
I crave for these… smile is
Not a lie…nothing can ever be
too distant to be called untruth
And even laughter can be
hollower than the desert...

The foggy midnight darkness
The lonely train in the empty
station…the lighthouse standing
tall… unkissed… the petals wilting
and the moonlight waning…
Paperboats floating in the
Evanescence…in search of
Dreamless lonely eyes…
Torn pages full of poems,
Unwritten…
Lyrics of the forlorn dusk …
The flute keeps on playing
in the country dust..
Little insects – they too
dive at the candle flame
And a candleflame can be
all alone, like you and me

I love you, my sweet sorrow…
Oh, how I crave your lonely
lips…your sad eyes…your
lap…for me to rest my lonely
tired head… I’ll wait for you, baby
For you to find me alone enough…
I'll wait till the dawn of eternity
finds me and my absinth ...

...all alone...

Selfish Thoughts on God and Devil

It gnaws and crawls
within, the holy beast,
The little big son of
Lucifer, I presume
Pure as hell, sure as heaven
It wants to be free, for sure
free like a dead man
But I love it, and I try
to keep it within
As the Hemlock breeds
for Socrates to bleed
And the catacombs burst
open…let’s peep in
What do we see? --
Dead poets, dying stars
And living rats…
Persecuted all right
Not the dead or dying
But the living ones…
The biggest curse we’ve
ever known is that the beast
within can never be tamed
And we’ll have to carry the
burden of the Sin…
Right unto the east of
Eden…
And what else?...Smokes…
wave at us… the scent
of the darkness… the womb…
The magnolia of the eyes
Someone I loved, you loved
in dreams…till the beast
tore her up, within…
Faced with two options
love and the beast…
We’ll invariably chose the
second one…

Disillusions, Dizzy Illusions and Dissolutions

Cold and distant star…
The last drops of atomic eternity
float around…
Bubbles and tinted glory – dream – another
world we’re in, lights surround…
Fleeting visions, disarrayed
Let 'em stray
Blotted in evanescent meshwoks
Jotted down in attempted
verse...
Dreams don’t fade that life …
And returning – turns only to say
Didn’t you see the blood in my knife?

The Holy Grail and the Butcher - With a Few Question Marks

I build up my nights,
and I drown in them
The vacant maze
of civilazions
slip,
between my fingers
The fire burns beneath my
teapot, and it burns elsewhere too
The cigerette sings
a lullaby to me,
with her coiling smoke-stream
Faintly hoping that it would affect
me, anymore
But my own songs
are written in charcoal sketches
on the blank backside
of the ticket of the bus
which leads to the station
of eternity…
I don’t give a shit to that
My skin and my cock
feel the same
And am too tired to sleep…
Written words…written words…
why the hell do you march
in a column
like scared soldiers,
waiting for some godforsaken
Napoleon's orders?
Can’t you guys be a bit
more chaotic than this ?
That would make me
more comfortable
with my verse
Eternity has got stuck
on the cob-webs
and a lizard might
try to swallow it up
clumsily, before long
But why do I even care?
I live this moment alright
and I feel it too
But will I feel the
next one?
Pray why the hell
should I care ‘bout that
either….
I’ve attained nirvana
at the rustling
bee-bones of my leaves…
And moksha is just a
few gas-stations away…
Closer than the stars
for sure

Epitaph of a Shipwrecked Brother

They return to me at the sunset
All my lonely tears
I do not know where they come from
I do not know what they seek…
But sure as hell they come
Like the sad songbirds…
The rest of it is all empty, hollow
Hollow like my sleepless eyes
Emplty like my dreamless nights…
The moonlight’s too shallow a sea
For me to swim and drown
The stars are too morbid and numb
To sing to my vacuous heart…
My bedroom mirror's too cracked
For me to look at my own soul
And my pains are so deep
That I don’t feel them anymore…
…………………………………………………
This is my epitaph, brothers and sisters
Please don’t pee on it

Transcendental Bubbles

Far away
The misty grey night
Sinks down the horizon,
Dreams, driven seven feet deep
No time here,
But this very moment
Leaves its swirling trace
In the fogrings
Circling the yellow halucinations
Around the empty streetlights
Life ...
Dangling up and down
Around the speedometer
And vanishing in the canvas
- Of silence
With the falling stars
Lizards crawling through
Along the milestones
Empty cactus, thorny caterpillars
Hearts hanging upside down
Bleeding frozen, bloods dripping - frozen
blood
And empty broken signboards
Invitations of sex
Conscientous, consciences, consciousness, broken teeth
- Are the stakes
And pyres,
Burning one old silent witch
And muted roses bleeding
For more roses to bleed
Here, amongst the falling snowflakes
The vanishing twilights
The numbness of the souls
Dancing with the smokerings
With life, love, and dust particles...
And beneath this gurgling evanescence
Emptyness beckons,
To lead you into the repititive
dreams
And the mechanics
And the solemnizing harmony...
To the end of this universe
And thunder grows in all dead
Shoots, -
Crimson haze
Tilted gaze
Shaded hues
Tinted frogs...
And green spectacles...all
With clapping spectators
All these dampen up the squib
So let us keep quiet now,
For the time being
As all the while, this nowness
Prevails
Like the prevailing
Veil -
Let this very moment sink in
Like the frozen eyes of tomorrows tidings
And the janitress, the mistress, the priestess, the princess,
Bows down too,
The damsel keeps on dancing
As I wait for the morning star
And my conscience waits for the
next bus
To the middle of nowhere...

Explositions and Harvests

The classroom was empty
But for the benches, the chairs,
The white chalkmarks on the black board
And torn pages stewn all across the floor
There were no questions to be asked
And no answers to be given
And yet, and yet, I raised my hand
- My leprosy ridden hand
- My hand which I couldn't see anymore...

The seashore was vacant,
No people, no pebbles, not even a trace
Of the last of the dead seagulls,
Which used to haunt the Ancient Mariner
In me...
The waves dashed and gnashed,
And tried to eat the seashore,
the cliff, my being, my world, my
words, my everything
Up in one gulp
And yet, and yet, I forgot to flinch
I forgot to live, I forgot to die
For the mist had engulfed my soul
Which had set sail across
On a voyage to nowhere,
Unto the womb of a predestined
tiding - the broken chain of tomorrow...

I stared at the Sphynx's eyes
Which looked cold and distant
Gazing across the empty desert
Across the hazy horizon
Right into the eyes of eternity
Right into that mournful dawn
Right into the halo of the streetlights
Right into the burning atoms
of the poison fire -
But it didn't look into my smokey eyes...
So I left Egypt, and I travelled
across Greece, Rome, Palestine, Bethlehem
Persia...
And I saw them burning,
burning
- I saw them being reduced to
Heaps of worthless ashes - all dirty and grey
- And I stood on your
doorsteps,
I knocked on your door
But did you open it?
Believe me, my love, I don't really
remember...

Yellow circles, yellow circles,
All over,
Smokes - dancing atop the darkness
Blue smokes - had covered
My self...
And my eyes were hollow...

Yes, I know it, I god damn know it
That I have no answer to give,
Nothing to search for,
But to fly, to fly like a lonely kite,
And to kiss my own lips in the mirror...
Before the mirror gets cracked
And before I get charred and
burnt
Which I know I'm going to anyway...
